Waar gaat Spawn over?

Al Simmons, een Afro-Amerikaanse werknemer van de Amerikaanse regering, wordt gedood tijdens zijn werk als CIA-moordenaar. Geheel toegewijd aan zijn vrouw Wanda, verkoopt Al zijn ziel aan de duivel - Malebolgia - in ruil voor een tweede kans op aarde. Malebolgia heeft hem echter vijf jaar de toekomst in gestuurd, zonder herinneringen, en in de onherkenbare vorm van Spawn, een wezen met bovenmenselijke krachten. Spawn gaat op aarde de strijd aan met allerlei duistere krachten, maar moet daarnaast ook zien af te rekenen met het kwaad in zichzelf.
